A shooting near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta has left one police officer dead. Multiple rounds were fired, both at law enforcement and potentially at the CDC. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that multiple rounds were fired. The shooting occurred near the CDC campus and Emory University in Atlanta, resulting in the death of one DeKalb County police officer and an injury to another law enforcement officer. Four bullet holes were found on the CDC campus walls. DeKalb County Police Department Chief Greg Padrick expressed gratitude for the deceased officer’s family, friends, and loved ones.

CDC director Susan Monarez applauded law enforcement officials’ timely response to the shooting, stating that they are heartbroken by the attack on the Roybal Campus, which remains on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting. The shooter was found deceased at the scene with a gunshot wound, and it is unclear whether it was self-inflicted or if he was shot by an officer. Paul Brown, FBI Special Agent, noted that his motive has not been determined. CNN reported that law enforcement is operating under the assumption that the shooter believed he was sick and blamed the illness on the COVID-19 vaccine. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his support for the CDC and its employees, expressing their solidarity and efforts to bring resolve to the situation.
