Zohran Mamdani, a progressive upstart and party-nominee, has been gaining support from moderate Democrats since securing the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor in June. Mamdani has met with business leaders and given a speech at an African Methodist Church, appealing to demographics that have been lukewarm or even resistant to him. Political observers, including Republican strategist Susan Del Percio, believe Mamdani’s efforts to consolidate support with a move toward the center are succeeding. A Siena College poll showed Mamdani leading the field of candidates for New York City’s mayorship with 44% of the vote. Cuomo, an opponent of Mamdani’s, has been attacking him in a viral statement on social media. Mamdani is making these efforts to steer endorsements away from his competitors and lay the groundwork for operational success as mayor. However, strategists say he will also have to make political inroads with his weakest demographics to secure a victory in November.
