Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) criticized Costco for appeasing “far-right extremists” by refusing to sell safe, effective, and legal abortion medication mifepristone. Murray expressed concern over the retailer’s decision to not dispense the drug, which comes after CVS and Walgreens received certification to provide it in states where abortion remains legal. Murray pressed Costco to rescind its decision, stating that limiting access to mifepristone is harmful to women’s health and that the availability of women’s health care should not be based on the demands of far-right anti-abortion extremists. The Supreme Court ruled last year that anti-abortion doctors did not have the legal basis to challenge access to the pill. Despite this, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary are weighing a review of the abortion pill, and Murray questioned Makary during his Senate confirmation hearing on the proposal.
