Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has urged US President Donald Trump to provide “watertight” assurances regarding Patriot air-defense systems for Ukraine. Pistorius stated that Germany and its NATO allies need guarantees that US-manufactured Patriot systems delivered to Ukraine would be replaced within six to eight months. Trump has suggested European NATO countries could buy weapons from the US, which could then be delivered for Ukraine to defend itself amid Russia’s invasion. The US is seeking Germany and other European countries to send Patriot systems to Ukraine first from their own stocks, followed by sending replacement systems to European allies. Pistorius emphasized the need for countries transferring systems to meet NATO requirements and avoid security gaps.
