President Trump has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged a potential bilateral meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting will take place at a time and location to be determined, marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since the start of the war in February 2022. Trump and other world leaders put momentum behind the trilateral meeting, as Europeans descended on the White House, along with Zelensky, for meetings on Monday following Trump hosting Putin in Alaska on Friday. During the meeting, security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed, with security guarantees provided by various European countries and coordination with the United States of America. Trump, Zelensky, and other European leaders projected a unified front, but some sticking points emerged, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s argument that a ceasefire agreement was necessary for a follow-up meeting with Putin. Trump left open the possibility of U.S. forces being involved, but indicated Europe would take the lead on the initiative. Trump has said it will be up to Ukraine to determine potential territorial concessions as part of any peace agreement, though he has sometimes indicated land swaps may be necessary.
