In 2003, a 22-year-old couple decided to fly from the UK to Australia and spend six months road-tripping through the outback. They were driving 250km from Julia Creek to Mount Isa in Queensland when they encountered a loud bang beneath their van and a rusty fuel tank. The van stopped running, but they were only 100 meters from a rest stop where they found a new, high-spec camper van. Despite being apprehensive about approaching strangers, they were greeted by a barrel-chested Aussie who offered suggestions and fixed the jerrycan to the engine. They were able to get the van to Mount Isa, where they were followed by a retired mechanic, Pete, and his wife. Pete and his wife had kids travelling in England at the time and would have wanted strangers to help them if needed. They were extremely lucky with Pete and his wife, as without them, they would have been very stuck without a clue what to do on a hot day.
We experienced a breakdown in the outback, and a retired mechanic stepped in to help us out. Sac 912
