India’s defence minister, Rajnath Singh, has stated that New Delhi ended its military conflict with Pakistan in May, rejecting Trump’s claim that he brokered the truce. Singh stated that all political and military objectives had been fully achieved, and that the operation was called off under pressure. The Kashmir attack, which killed 26 people, was the worst assault on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. New Delhi claimed Pakistani nationals were involved in the killings and blamed Islamabad for backing them. Pakistan denied involvement and sought an independent investigation. The conflict involved fighter jets, missiles, drones, and other munitions, killing dozens of people before Trump announced a ceasefire. India said Washington had no hand in the agreement and that New Delhi and Islamabad had agreed to end the fighting. Opposition groups have questioned the intelligence failure behind the Kashmir attack and the government’s inability to capture the assailants. They have also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for coming under pressure from Trump and agreeing to end the fighting. The Himalayan region of Kashmir has been at the heart of the hostility between India and Pakistan, both of whom claim the region in full but rule it in part.
The defence minister has denied that India has complied with pressure to end its conflict with Pakistan. Sac 873
