The FBI report revealed a 4.5% decline in violent crime in 2024, following a 3% drop the previous year and a general downward trend since COVID-related levels peaked. The report also showed a year-over-year decrease across all other major crime categories, with murder and nonnegligent manslaughter declining by 14.9%, rapes decreasing by 5.2%, aggravated assault decreasing by 3%, and robbery decreasing by 8.9%. Hate crimes decreased by 1.5% in 2024. Brian Levin, founder of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and professor emeritus at California State University, San Bernardino, stated that despite the decline in hate crimes, last year still recorded the second highest levels in the 30 years that the center has collected data.
