Trump has appointed conservative economist EJ Antoni as the next labor statistics chief. ThuyTruong 665

Trump has announced his nomination of E.J. Antoni, a top economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, to serve as the next commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Antoni, who previously contributed to Project 2025’s policy rubric, has expressed skepticism about data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Trump previously ordered the firing of Erika McEntarfer, a Biden White House appointee, in 2024. Antoni’s nomination is expected to improve transparency and accuracy, as the GOP holds a 53-47 GOP majority, giving him a path to the job even if there are defections. Antoni’s appointment comes after the jobs report released in early August showed lower-than-expected hiring in July and major downward revisions to the jobs reports from May and June. Critics note McEntarfer had little to do with the numbers and expressed concern that it would erode credibility and confidence in government data, hurting businesses and consumers.
