Trump is working on a crime bill with Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, as part of his federal law enforcement crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C. The bill aims to address the issue of crime in DC and other cities run by Democrats, such as Chicago and Baltimore. Since the president first sent federal law enforcement into Washington on August 7, over 1,094 arrests have been made, including eight gang members, two missing children, 115 firearms seized, and 49 homeless encampments cleared. Trump has also announced his intention to push for the death penalty in cases of murder in D.C., a strong preventative measure. The Supreme Court nullified capital punishment in 1972 in the District, and efforts to reinstate it have failed. Trump’s efforts to address crime in DC have been significant in the 2024 campaign and continue to be a focus for the Republican party.
