Trump has intensified his warnings to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) to control Chicago crime or face a federal law enforcement takeover. Trump posted on Truth Social, accusing Pritzker of being “crazy” and demanding he straighten it out quickly or face a military takeover. This comes after Trump suggested deploying National Guard troops in Chicago earlier this month. Trump and Pritzker have been in a back-and-forth relationship, with Trump often citing Chicago crime statistics in his notes. Pritzker challenged Trump’s claims, stating that 13 of the top 20 cities in homicide rates have Republican governors, but none of those cities are Chicago. Pritzker also warned Trump against sending the National Guard to Windy City, as he has done with other Democrat-run cities, including Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. He called the move “exactly the type of overreach that our country’s founders warned against.” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order detailing how Windy City will respond to Trump’s potential move, stating that the city will do everything in its power to defend democracy and protect communities. Trump has also touted a drop in crime in Washington, D.C. since he began his federal takeover earlier this month.
Trump urges Pritzker to swiftly address the Chicago crime issue.
